What are the differences between neodymium magnets and ordinary magnets?

The differences between neodymium magnets and ordinary magnets are mainly reflected in the following three aspects:

 

Composition

Ordinary magnets: Primarily made of metals such as iron, cobalt, and nickel, or their alloys. These metals possess natural magnetism.

Neodymium magnets: Made of an alloy composed of elements such as neodymium, iron, and boron. They belong to a type of rare-earth magnet, and this special composition gives them superior magnetic properties.

 

Magnetic Strength

Ordinary magnets: Have relatively low magnetic strength and are suitable for applications where high magnetic force is not required.

Neodymium magnets: Are one of the strongest permanent magnets known today. Their magnetic strength far exceeds that of ordinary magnets, producing a greater magnetic force for the same volume.

 

Application Fields

Ordinary magnets: Are mostly used in applications where high magnetic force is not required, such as refrigerator magnets and educational demonstrations.

Neodymium magnets: Are widely used in high-tech fields such as motors, generators, magnetic bearings, magnetic separation equipment, audio equipment, and medical devices, such as the permanent magnets in wind power generation and the strong magnetic fields in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machines.
