Neodymium magnets are currently the strongest man-made permanent magnets, with a magnetic force more than 10 times stronger than ordinary magnets.
1. Magnetic force depends on grade and size
Neodymium magnets are classified into different grades from N35 to N52. A coin-sized N52 magnet can easily lift about 5 kilograms of iron. Large industrial neodymium magnets even require specialized tools to separate them.
2. Everyday comparisons are more intuitive
The ferrite magnets commonly used for refrigerator magnets can only hold one sheet of paper, while a neodymium magnet of the same size can lift an entire pack of A4 paper. In laboratories, neodymium magnets have been shown to demagnetize bank cards through clothing pockets, demonstrating their extremely strong magnetic field penetration.
3. Special safety precautions are needed during use
Two walnut-sized neodymium magnets can pinch fingers when they quickly attract each other. When joining them, maintain a distance of at least 5 centimeters and approach them slowly. It is not recommended for children to handle them alone, and they should be stored in a non-metallic box to prevent them from sticking to other objects.
Neodymium magnets are commonly used in medical equipment repair to quickly attract precision screws. The 5mm thick disc-shaped magnets sold in hardware stores are difficult to remove from metal surfaces with one hand. In recent years, some manufacturers have introduced safety versions with a rubber buffer layer, which maintain strong magnetic properties while reducing the risk of accidental injury.
